1. Check Your Email for a Security Notification
- Instagram often sends an email to the associated email address if your account's email was changed. Look for an email from Instagram with the subject "Email Changed on Instagram" or "Instagram Email Changed".
- If you received this email and didn't change your email, you can revert this change by selecting the revert this change link in the email.
2. Request a Login Link from Instagram
- On the login page, tap Forgot password? (iOS) or Get help logging in (Android).
- Enter your username, email address, or phone number associated with your account, then tap Next.
- Select either Send an Email, Send an SMS, or Log in with Facebook.
- Follow the instructions to reset your password and regain access to your account.
3. Verify Your Identity
- If you’re unable to recover your account using the above methods, Instagram might ask for additional verification.
- Go to the Instagram login page and select Forgot password?.
- Enter your username, email address, or phone number, then tap Need more help?.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. Instagram might ask for a selfie with a code they send you or other identifying information.
4. Use Instagram’s Account Recovery Form
- If you still can't regain access, go to the Instagram Help Center.
- Navigate to Privacy and Safety Center > Report Something > Hacked Accounts > I think my Instagram account has been hacked.
- Click Report it to us and follow the steps provided to complete the account recovery form.
5. Secure Your Account
Once you've regained access to your account, it's essential to secure it to prevent future hacking incidents:
- Change Your Password: Choose a strong, unique password that you haven’t used before.
- Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): This adds an extra layer of security by requiring a code from your phone in addition to your password.
- Go to your profile, tap the menu (three lines), select Settings > Security > Two-Factor Authentication, and follow the instructions to enable it.
- Check Account Activity: Review any recent activity to ensure no unauthorized actions were taken.
- Revoke Access to Suspicious Apps: Go to Settings > Security > Apps and Websites to review and revoke access to any suspicious third-party apps.
Additional Tips
- Update Your Email and Phone Number: Make sure the email address and phone number associated with your account are up to date.
- Be Cautious of Phishing Scams: Avoid clicking on suspicious links or providing your credentials to unverified sources.
