How to Set Privacy Settings on Facebook

1. Access Privacy Settings

  • Open Facebook: Log into your Facebook account on the mobile app or web browser.
  • Settings & Privacy:
    • On Desktop: Click on the downward-facing arrow at the top right corner and select "Settings & Privacy" > "Settings."
    • On Mobile: Tap on the three horizontal lines (menu icon) at the bottom right (iOS) or top right (Android), scroll down, and tap on "Settings & Privacy" > "Settings."

2. Privacy Settings and Tools

  • Privacy: In the Settings menu, click on “Privacy” to access the main privacy settings.

3. Manage Your Privacy Settings

  • Who Can See Your Future Posts:
    • Click on “Edit” next to this option to choose who can see your future posts. Options include Public, Friends, Friends except..., Specific friends, and Only me.
  • Limit Past Posts:
    • You can change the audience for posts you’ve shared with the Public or Friends of friends to Friends only.
  • Who Can See Your Friends List:
    • Click on “Edit” and choose who can see your friends list. Options include Public, Friends, Only me, or Custom.
  • Who Can Look You Up Using the Email Address You Provided:
    • Click on “Edit” and select who can look you up using your email address.
  • Who Can Look You Up Using the Phone Number You Provided:
    • Click on “Edit” and select who can look you up using your phone number.
  • Do You Want Search Engines Outside of Facebook to Link to Your Profile:
    • Click on “Edit” and toggle this setting on or off.

4. Timeline and Tagging Settings

Timeline and Tagging: Go back to the main Settings menu and click on “Timeline and Tagging.”

Who Can Post on Your Timeline:

  • Choose whether only you or your friends can post on your timeline.

Who Can See What Others Post on Your Timeline:

  • Choose who can see posts made by others on your timeline.

Review Posts You’re Tagged In Before the Post Appears on Your Timeline:

  • Enable Timeline Review to review posts you’re tagged in before they appear on your timeline.

Who Can See Posts You’re Tagged In on Your Timeline:

  • Choose who can see posts you’re tagged in on your timeline.

Review Tags People Add to Your Posts Before the Tags Appear on Facebook:

  • Enable Tag Review to review tags people add to your posts before they appear.

5. Blocking

Blocking: Go to “Blocking” in the main Settings menu.

Manage Blocked Users:

  • Add users to your block list to prevent them from seeing your profile or contacting you.

Block Messages and Calls:

  • Block messages and calls from specific users.

Block App Invites:

  • Block invites from specific users.

Block Event Invites:

  • Block event invites from specific users.

Block Apps:

  • Block specific apps from contacting you or accessing your information.

Block Pages:

  • Block pages from interacting with your profile or seeing your posts.

6. Location Settings

Location Settings: Manage location settings to control how Facebook uses your location information.

Location Services:

  • Enable or disable location services for Facebook.

Location History:

  • View and manage your location history if you have it enabled.

7. Security and Login

Security and Login: Access security settings to manage login alerts and two-factor authentication.

Get Alerts About Unrecognized Logins:

  • Set up alerts for unrecognized logins.

Two-Factor Authentication:

  • Enable two-factor authentication for added security.

Tips for Effective Privacy Management:

  • Regular Reviews: Periodically review your privacy settings to ensure they align with your preferences.
  • Custom Lists: Use custom lists to share posts with specific groups of people.
  • Be Cautious: Be mindful of the information you share publicly.
