How to Set Privacy Settings on YouTube

1. Managing Channel and Video Privacy Settings

Channel Privacy Settings

Access YouTube Studio:

  • Open a web browser, go to YouTube, and log in to your account.
  • Click on your profile picture in the top right corner and select “YouTube Studio”.

Navigate to Settings:

  • In the left-hand menu, scroll down and click on “Settings”.

Privacy Settings:

  • Click on “Channel” and then on the “Advanced settings” tab.
  • Here you can adjust settings such as disabling interest-based ads, making your channel made for kids, and more.

Video Privacy Settings

Upload Video:

  • When uploading a video, you’ll be prompted to set the video’s visibility.

Set Video Visibility:

  • Public: Anyone can search for and view.
  • Unlisted: Only people with the link can view.
  • Private: Only you and people you choose can view.
  • Scheduled: Set to public at a scheduled time.

Change Existing Video Privacy Settings:

  • Go to YouTube Studio.
  • In the left-hand menu, click on “Content”.
  • Find the video you want to edit, click on the visibility setting next to it, and choose your desired privacy option.

2. Adjusting Comment Settings

Navigate to YouTube Studio:

  • Log in to your account and go to YouTube Studio.

Access Comment Settings:

  • In the left-hand menu, click on “Settings”.
  • Go to the “Community” tab and then the “Defaults” sub-tab.

Set Comment Visibility:

  • Choose whether you want to allow all comments, hold potentially inappropriate comments for review, hold all comments for review, or disable comments.

3. Controlling Subscriber Notifications

Manage Subscriptions:

  • Click on your profile picture in the top right corner and select “Settings”.
  • In the left-hand menu, click on “Notifications”.

Adjust Notification Settings:

  • Choose your preferences for channel subscriptions, including whether you want to receive notifications for all activity, personalized activity, or none.

4. Customizing Your Profile Privacy

Manage Privacy Settings:

  • Click on your profile picture and go to “Settings”.
  • Click on the “Privacy” tab.

Adjust Privacy Options:

  • Here you can manage whether others can see your subscriptions and saved playlists.

5. Using Restricted Mode

  1. Enable Restricted Mode:
    • Scroll to the bottom of any YouTube page.
    • Click on “Restricted Mode” and toggle it on. This helps hide potentially mature content.

6. Blocking and Reporting Users

Block Users:

  • Go to the profile of the user you want to block.
  • Click on the three dots on their profile page and select “Block user”.

Report Inappropriate Content:

  • Click on the three dots next to a video or comment and select “Report”.

7. Managing Data and Personalization

Access Google Account Settings:

  • Go to your Google Account by clicking on your profile picture and selecting “Manage your Google Account”.

Data and Personalization:

  • Navigate to the “Data & personalization” tab.
  • Here you can manage your activity controls, ad settings, and privacy settings across all Google services, including YouTube.

Tips for Privacy and Security

  • Use Strong Passwords: Ensure your Google account password is strong and unique.
  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication: Add an extra layer of security to your account.
  • Regularly Review Privacy Settings: Periodically check and update your privacy settings to ensure they align with your preferences.
